Are robots safe for pedestrians?

At Kiwibot we are improving people's lives with deliveries for everyone. Since 2017, we have been committed to turning last-mile delivery into a convenient service and building a world where robots and humans coexist harmoniously.

To ensure safe navigation, we comply with every regulation and law on campuses and in cities where we have operations, and we rely on the most advanced technology to guarantee pedestrian safety. That, combined with a semi-autonomous driving system, allows our robots to create a virtual picture of the world in real time using high-tech sensors, reflective flags, night lights and a range lidar.

Also, if additional help is needed, each delivery bot counts on remote and on-site support to have safe, fast and successful operations. Furthermore, we are completing every robotic delivery with zero carbon emissions, helping reduce our footprint and ensuring sustainable mobility in the cities and on campuses.

As an Open Mobility Foundation (OMF) member, at Kiwibot we seek to accomplish its every policy goal and develop transportation solutions, while we respect the public right-of-way. Among public and non-public members we help “to transform the way cities manage transportation infrastructure in the modern era using well-designed, open-source technology.” Accordingly, we are helping to use the city's infrastructure to guarantee a better future for all in terms of mobility.

In this regard, our electric robot has been designed to serve the community. “When we design our robots and develop our software we take into account that these are going to serve human beings, that is why we aim to be the pioneers in establishing a harmonious relation between humans and robots,” affirmed Felipe Chavez, CEO and co-founder.

On the whole, our operations are focused on pedestrian safety. Once the robot is at pickup, it can be loaded with the food to continue on its way to the dropoff point. These points have been strategically selected and specific routes have been established along sidewalks to guarantee that no road is being blocked. Julián Echeverri, Expansion Manager, points out how pedestrian safety is intrinsic to this process: “The campus mobility and foot traffic are taken into account to serve customers' needs safely by yielding the right of way.”

Finally, our robots move at the same speed as an adult walking pace, and we set up the perfect rate for each campus or city, according to regulatory authorities. So, if you are sharing the sidewalk with a Kiwibot, you can be sure that it is safe to walk beside the robot.
